Dr. Herman Gray
Herman B. Gray, M.D. is a pediatrician and the president of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, the first and most experienced hospital in Michigan. Prior to president of the hospital, Gray served as its chief operating officer.
Gray is the first African American president in the history of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan and holds a MBA degree from the University of Tennessee Physician Executive MBA Program.
Active in many professional organizations, Gray is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and holds memberships in the American College of Healthcare Executives, American College of Physician Executives, American Medical Association, and Michigan State Medical Society, among others. He also serves on national, state and local committees including the US General Accounting Office Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC); National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions; and the Child Health Corporation of America Board of Trustees.
Gray’s history with the Children’s Hospital of Michigan dates back to the late 1970s where he completed his pediatric residency and served as chief pediatric resident. He has served as Department of Pediatrics vice chief for education, residency program director, chief of staff, associate dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME) and vice president for GME at Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) respectively. Gray continues as a clinical associate professor in pediatrics.
In addition to a long-standing career at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan and the DMC, Gray has served as chief medical consultant for the Michigan Department of Public Health Children’s Special Health Services Division and vice president and medical director of Clinical Affairs for Blue Care Network, a subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
A long time proponent of Family Centered Care and a child advocate, Gray has received numerous honors for his humanitarian efforts related to pediatric health care, particularly for children with special needs. Gray’s awards include the 2008 MHA Health Care Leadership Award, 2008 Diversity Business Leader Award from Corp!, Robert B. Johnson Diversity Award from the DMC, Lifetime Achievement Award from the Michigan SIDS Alliance, Outstanding Leadership Award from the Michigan Department of Public Health, Humanitarian Man of the Year Award from the Minority Women’s Network, Detroit Chapter, and the Outstanding Physician Leader of the Year from the University of Tennessee College of Business Administration.
